Meitheal Chill Mhantain was set up in by Mike in 2002, conceived as a bulk buyers group for Organic, Fairtrade and Eco-friendly items.
The goal was twofold: allow people to afford to buy wholefoods, and tp create a community of like-minded people who could help each other in other ways.
Through inspiration from Mike's experience with the Hanover Coop in the USA, and with help from some of the people involved with the Dublin food co-op, the group began pooling bulk wholefoods orders and briefly published a small newsletter. Some of the work involved was shared, and several people contributed their energy and practical help.
Meitheal also tried creating an outlet for local people wishing to sell to each other in the group with limited sucess. Another idea was to create and support a local currency such as time dollars or LETS
By the time Mike & Suzie founded Carraig Dúlra, many of the most enthusiastic helpers had moved away or couldn't continue to give the time needed, so Mike was doing all the work of Meitheal on his own. At that point he decided to bring the wholefoods business within Carraig Dúlra, while still offering the same service and lower costs.
We've built on the original concept by opening an OOOOBY Store in Glenealy, with an online catalogue and product search, for pre-ordering items. The shop will be open most days, and Saturdays will be order pickup day with a market atmosphere where you can meet the local producers.
