Weekend on the Mountain, Bushcraft, Music Workshops - all on 11-12 August
With the help of our WWOOFers, most of whom have come from North America, the vegetable garden and kitchen area have seen great improvements! We have been gearing up for our biggest event so far, to be held over the weekend of 11-12 August. Over this weekend we will be holding traditional skills training, an introductory primitive living/bushcraft course and children's music workshops.
You can stay and camp for the weekend or just attend during the day. During breaks you're welcome to tour the land or take walks in the adjoining woods. We'll have tea and coffee available all day, and an organic vegetarian lunch from a local chef will be available (additional cost). Or you can picnic and use our BBQ or the (improved!) sheltered outdoor kitchen (except during times when our chef is using it).
The activities running this weekend include:

Children's Music Workshops
Under 12's and 12-18's
We are pleased to offer children's music workshops at Carraig Dulra for the first time! These are running during the CELT Weekend, so that parents who are taking the CELT courses can enrol their children at a discount. Others not taking the CELT courses may also arrange for their children to attend.
African Drumming Workshops
For teenagers (12-18). Two hours, running on both Saturday and Sunday
maximum number of children – 20
Children find drum circles a very enjoyable way of developing their innate musicality and sense of belonging. A drum circle is an occasion of community which also allows us to express our own individuality. When drumming we sit in a circle to play rhythm games, explore our own rhythms and learn African poly (multi) rhythms using a wide variety of percussion instruments. While helping us come together as a group the drum also enables us to develop our coordination, concentration and self esteem in a relaxed, enjoyable and supportive environment.
Sounds, instrument and improvisation Workshop
For under 12's. Two hours, running on both Saturday and Sunday
maximum number of children – 12
These workshops for younger children will explore the world of sound; the sounds of commonplace items and of found items as well as the sounds of instruments; those which we will make during the workshop and some others, usual and unusual, provided for exploration. We will find sounds that attract us, we will make instruments and tell stories bringing our environment and our imagination into our play. From before birth sound attracts our interest and holds our attention. Parents are welcome to join with younger children as we create and manipulate sound, tell stories and express our feelings in creative and imaginative ways.
Rory Adams is an experienced drummer and workshop facilitator and has been providing music workshops using song, rhythm, movement, and improvisation in schools and for varied groups of all ages for ten years. He facilitates community drum circles for adults in west Wicklow where he lives. Rory is also a music therapist working with children and adults in individual and group settings.
Cars at Carraig Dulra
In order to highlight the environmental issues around driving, and in particular because we have limited parking, we strongly encourage people to use public transport to visit us. We will happily do pickup/dropoffs from local public transport stops, and for those who drive, we will arrange parking nearby where you can ring us and we will collect you. Our small parking area is normally reserved for Tutors with heavy materials, and people with physical disabilities. This is particularly true for the weekend of 11-12 August, which will be our busiest ever. Contact us if you need help with logistics getting here!
The nearest Public Transport:
Bus Eireann: Glenealy, Ashford or Wicklow Town
Irish Rail: Wicklow Town
Look out for us at the new Wicklow Farmers' Market (we are sharing some space on the Crocker's stall) on Saturdays!
