Special Edition newsletter

Hi everyone, here we are with a special edition of our (normally biweekly) newsletter.

Why a special edition?  Because we want to share with you all two great upcoming events in the Co Wicklow community:

Interested in growing your own food? Launch of GIY Wicklow Group

From 4.30 to 6 pm on Saturday the 17th of October, the OOOOBY store in Glenealy will be the venue for the inaugural meeting of GIY (Grow it Yourself) Wicklow.

GIY networks aim to take the ''self'' out of ''self-sufficiency'' by getting back-garden growers together on a regular basis to talk, learn from each other and exchange tips, produce and "war-stories".  The meetings are free and open to people interested in food growing at all levels, i.e. from growing a few herbs on the balcony to complete self-sufficiency, from beginners to old hands.

Hundreds of people are involved in existing GIY groups around Ireland and activities include talks on specific food-growing topics, garden visits, seed swaps, produce bartering, mentor panels and the return of the meitheal (where growers get together in one another’s gardens to carry out some growing related task).

GIY (Grow It Yourself) was started by Michael Kelly, an Irish journalist in Waterford. It’s meant to be a group of people passionate about growing food that gathers to exchange skills and knowledge on gardening matters.

Powerdown Course at the Happy Pear restaurant

A groundbreaking course on building resilient communities begins on 7:30 pm on Thursday 8th October at The Happy Pear in Greystones.

The first night of this course, called Skilling up for Power Down, is on 8 October and is open to everybody free of charge.  It is an introduction to the Powerdown concept for people that are curious about this new topic and would like to have a taste of the topics that are going to be touched on during the 7 weeks course.  The course will provide an interactive forum to explore practical solutions in areas such as energy, transport, and food that individuals and the community can actually achieve.

At a time of such economic and energy uncertainty, it is empowering to know that positive action is being taken within our own community. Recently established, the Wicklow Transition Network is one of several country-wide initiatives being set up by individuals concerned about the over-reliance of communities on rapidly shrinking energy and food supplies in the face of global economic crisis.  The Wicklow Transition Network includes community gardners, permaculture experts and trainers, educators on sustainability and the economy, as well as generally concerned citizens.

For more information contact Matt at the Happy Pear 087 9978137 (a graduate of last year’s Powerdown in Wicklow Town), or Kathryn Speedie, one of the trainer/facilitators, at the email address kathrynspeedie@yahoo.co.uk.

This Powerdown course is funded by Co Wicklow Partnership

Hope to see you at one or both of these events!
