A Wormery is a very simple but highly effective and environmentally friendly method of turning dead organic matter (such as cooked and uncooked food and kitchen waste) into a superbly high quality worm cast compost (Vermicompost) and a nutritious liquid feed (leachate), which you can use in your garden and around your home.

Worm compost, like that produced by our Wormeries, is often referred to by the experts as ‘black gold’ as it really is the best and most nutrient rich you can get. A Wormery is an expertly acclaimed method of obtaining this ‘black gold’ worm compost as well as reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill at the same time!

We supply Wormeries (and worms!) from the original inventors of the wormery (who also coined the term "wormery"!)

The best place to keep your Wormery is anywhere with a relatively stable temperature that is out of direct sunlight and preferably frost free. Most people keep their Wormery in their garage or next to the back door. A shed is also a popular location for a Wormery – you can also keep it indoors if you feel confident enough – and have space under a worktop or similar. During very cold weather or frosty/snowy conditions, it's a good idea to try and insulate it in some way, but it wouldn't be a normal requirement to bring it inside. They slow down in the cold but won't actually die off if the compost freezes - which needs a prolonged period of freezing temperatures in the wormery. By the edge of a house (where it is a bit warmer), in a shed / garage / conservatory or just popping a bit of bubble wrap around the outside the wormery will all help a fair bit through the colder weather in winter.

Whilst worms will eat fish, we generally advise against it as it can get smelly quickly – where a Wormery is usually not smelly at all. Small quantities of cooked meat however are fine.

Try to avoid using acidic foods in quantity as the worms find acidic conditions uncomfortable. We do, however, provide all our Wormeries with an ‘anti-acid’ lime mix which helps. Other than that, pretty much all of your cooked and uncooked food waste can be added straight into a Wormery, although cutting up thick fibrous waste such as broccoli and cauliflower stalks can be helpful.

Worms from your compost bin/heap can go into your Wormery if they are the small red wriggly worms rather than the mineral soil dwelling earthworm (lob worm = lumbricus terrestris). That said there should be no need to as we provide plenty to start with and they breed well in a Wormery.

Tiger Worms typically live for between 6 months up to 2 years, but they multiply well in a wormery so you should not have to buy worms again unless you have a disaster! They won't overpopulate either, they regulate their numbers based on space and food supply.

When you first get your wormery, your worms may appear to be trying to escape! This is because it takes a little time for their food to break down, and for the seal around the lid to close up. If your wormery is indoors, you can leave the light on for a couple of nights (worms won't come out in the light). If you're keeping it outdoors, just put a weight on the lid for a couple of days.

Price of all wormeries includes shipping direct from the supplier to your home.

Your wormery will normally be shipped to you within 5-7 days from your order. However, worms don't do well in the heat, so they will take a bit longer during hot weather.

Note that we do not sell worms separately, although you can get your wormery with a voucher and then later get the worms, which is handy if it is a gift or you're getting one in the dead of winter
